TheodoreDreiserisanexcellentrealisticwriterinthehistoryofAmericanliteraturewholivedintheperiodoftherapiddevelopmentofAmericancapitalism.Dreiserisoneofthewriterswholivedinthe19thcenturyandwitnessedthechanges.Inthe19thcentury,Americaindustrializedrapidlyandcapitalwascontrolledbythegreatcapitalists.Themonopolygroupsappeared,themildmaskofcapitalismwastornupandtherichledaluxuriouslifewhilethemassesstruggledforliving.Thisinfluencedthecreationofmanywriters,includingDreiser,whoobjectedtotheGenteelismpopularatthattimeandtheirworksfeaturedprofoundnaturalism.Dreiserisgoodatexposingthecrueltyandcontradictionsofcapitalisticsociety,whichmadehimoneoftheimportantwritersinAmericanliteraryintheearly20thcentury.SisterCarrie(1900),whichtracesthematerialriseofCarrieMeeberandthetragicdeclineofG.W.Hurstwood,wasDreisersfirstnovel.Becauseitdepictedsocialtransgressionsbycharacterswhofeltnoremorseandlargelyescapedpunishment,itwasvirtuallysuppressedbyitspublisher,whoprintedbutrefusedtopromotethebook.Sinceitsreissuein1907ithassteadilyriseninpopularityandscholarlyacceptanceasoneofthekeyworksintheDreisercanon.“Thoughturn-of-the-centuryreadersfoundDreiserspointofviewcrudeandimmoral,hisinfluenceonthefictionofthefirstquarterofthecenturyisperhapsgreaterthananyotherwriters.”(WeWeiren134)ItsetsChicagoandNewYorkinthelate19thcenturyasitsbackgroundtoshowtherapiddevelopmentofthecapitalismandittearsthegentleandcultivatedfrontofthebourgeoisie.ItshocksthewholesocietybecauseoftheexposureofthedarksidesinAmericansociety,suchasthedescriptionofcharacters,environmentandsex.Meanwhile,italsoattractsmanyreadersbecauseofDreisersaffirmationtotheawakeningofself-consciousnessofSisterCarrie.
